Road Tripping in Style, Teardrop Campers

With the new year approaching, within days actually, I am dreaming of travel. Road trips are a fun way to get a quick and inexpensive travel fix. Camping is of the world class variety here in Colorado, and would be even more cozy and even downright glamorous in a teardrop style camper.  My totally cool bohemian friend Kelly Twin and her husband Julian of Twin Spruce Campers recently launched their website offering custom built teardrop trailers. Julian hand builds each camper himself, offering the kind of craftsmanship you could imagine back in the 1930’s when teardrop campers originally started to be popular. The idea was to build a compact camper using  standard 4 by 8-foot sheets of plywood with hardwood spars.

Teardrop trailers are usually small, ranging from 4 feet (1.2 m) to 6 feet (1.8 m) in width and 8 feet (2.4 m) to 10 feet (3.0 m) in length. They are usually 4 feet (1.2 m) to 5 feet (1.5 m) in height. Wheels and tires are usually outside the body and are covered by fenders. Since teardrop trailers are so light, usually less than 1000 pounds (450 kg), just about any vehicle can tow one and fuel consumption is minimally affected. Got a 4 cylinder engine? No problem!

The design usually includes a “galley” or kitchen area in the back and a battery storage to supply lighting and electricity. Sometimes there are main power hookups like traditional travel trailers.

Do you have any travel dreams for 2014? I would love to take a trip to Yellowstone or Mesa Verde this year. I plan to take many pictures on my journeys and share them here. My hopes are to get in a couple of road trips and maybe even an actual vacation somewhere. One of my travel dreams include taking my girls to see the redwood forest in northern California.

Yellowstone has been an item on my bucket list for sometime too. It is not too far from Colorado, so it will be one for sure that I plan to cross off of that list. The beauty is just stunning…

Whatever your travel dreams, whether it is a cozy teardrop camper in Moab or hiking the Andes Mountains, I hope your they come true this year.
